  Germany crowned Mens Hockey World Cup champions

Germany were crowned champions in the 15th Mens Hockey World Cup, defeating defending champions Belgium in the thrilling final at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. Netherlands claimed the bronze medal, getting better of Australia 3-1 earlier in the day.

Trailing by 2 goals early in the first quarter, Germany fought their way back again and took the game into a shoot-out, where they held their nerves in the sudden deaths, winning 5-4. With the win Germany also claimed the top spot in the FIH Men’s World Outdoor Rankings.

In the bronze-medal match, Jeremy Hayward gave Australia an early lead, but an incredible three-goal burst in eight minutes in the third quarter, with captain Thierry Brinkman scoring twice, gave Netherlands the lead that they would take to the end.

 

With this win, followed by the defeat of Belgium in the finals, Netherlands moved up to the second position in the FIH Mens World Outdoor Rankings, followed by silver medalists Belgium who are now ranked third ahead of Australia, who end the tournament ranked fourth.

The tournament produced a total of 249 goals in 44 matches. There were 143 field goals, 94 penalty corner goals and 12 penalty stroke goals. Netherlands scored the most number of 32 goals

Match 44 (Final, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar): Germany (Niklas Wellen 28-PC, Gonzalo Peillat 40-PC, Mats Grambusch 47-FG) drew with Belgium (Florent van Aubel 9-FG, Tanguy Cosyns 10-FG, Tom Boon 58-PC) 3-3. Shootout: Germany (Thies Prinz, Niklas Wellen, Thies Prinz, Hannes Muller, Niklas Wellen) beat Belgium (Florent van Aubel, Antoine Kina, Tanguy Cosyns, Florent van Aubel) 5-4. PoM: Niklas Wellen.
