03 Feb 2023

Kayaking and canoeing athletes of Odisha ended their glorious campaign with a rich haul of 11 medals in the 4th Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) 2022 at the Upper Lake in Bhopal today. The 11 medals featured four gold, three silver and four bronze.

Odisha added three medals to its earlier haul of eight medals in kayaking and canoeing, claiming one gold, one silver and one bronze on the fifth day of the Games today. Pukhrambam Roji Devi won the gold medal in canoe sprint K-1 womens 200m with a time of 52.

Leichonbam Neha Devi won the silver medal in canoe sprint C-1 womens 200m with a time of 56.085, while Irom Borish Singh claimed the bronze medal in kayaking K-1 mens 200m, clocking 41,565.

Odisha women bagged the overall winners trophy while Odisha men received the overall runners-up trophy. As many as 13 players represented Odisha in kayaking and canoeing, which was included in the Khelo India Youth Games for the first time.

Khelo India Youth Games was the second major National level competition where Odisha won highest number of medals in kayaking and canoeing. Earlier, kayaking canoeing athletes captured eight medals (1 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze) in the 36th National Games, held in Gujarat in October 2022.

The major share of credit in Odisha achieving the remarkable success in kayaking and canoeing, however, goes to Sports Authority of India (SAI) and its coaches. This is because all the medal winners belong to SAI National Centre of Excellence, Jagatpur, Cuttack and have been trained by coaches Laishram Johnson Singh and Prithviraj Shinde.
