  Jena wins Indian Open gold; Majhi, Merel bag silver

Odisha athletes bagged one gold and two silver medals in the 2nd Indian Open Throws & Jumps Competition, which was held at Inspire Institute of Sports in Bellary, Karnataka on 1 and 2 March 2023. Kishore Kumar Jena won the mens javelin gold medal with an effort of 78.93m on March 1.

Jena struck gold in his third jump and with this jump he also improved his personal best. He had achieved his previous personal best of 78.05m at the Open National last year. Sarbjeet Singh (Punjab) and Abhishek Drall (Delhi) claimed the silver and bronze respectively.

Odisha woman long jumper Manisha Merel bagged silver medal with an effort of 5.96m on March 2. The gold and silver in this event went to Sruthilekshmi L (Kerala, 6.11m) and R Punitha (Tamil Nadu, 5.85m).

 

Swadhin Majhi grabbed the other silver medal for Odisha in mens high jump with a leap of 2.08m on March 2. Uchchaal Kumar Roy (West Bengal) also secured silver medal with identical effort of 2.08m. Sarvesh Kushare (Maharashtra) took the gold with a new meet record of 2.24m. Nikhil Das, also from Odisha, finished seventh with 2.00m.

Jeswin Aldrin of Tamil Nadu won the mens long jump gold medal with a massive world-leading 8.42m long jump that broke the one-year-old national record on March 2. The old mark was 8.36m set by Murali Sreeshankar.

Praveen Chithravel (Tamil Nadu) sets a new meet record (17.17m) in Triple Jump (Men) enroute to his gold medal. Swagat Behera of Odisha finished fifth in this event with a jump of 14.40m.
