Paralympic and World champion Pramod Bhagat and his Odisha statemate Deep Ranjan Bisoyee captured a total of three medals at the Spanish Para Badminton International, a BWF Level-1 Tournament, which concluded in Toledo, Spain today. The three medals included one silver and two bronze.
Bhagat won one silver and one bronze in mens SL3 singles and SL3-SU5 mixed doubles events respectively. In the singles final, second seed Bhagat was defeated by top seed Daniel Bethell of England 21-6, 21-18 in 54 minutes.
In mixed doubles, Bhagat and his Indian partner Manisha Ramadass secured the bronze medal by reaching semifinals with a 21-16, 17-21, 21-17 win over Sweden-Norway combination of Rickard Nilsson and Halle Sofie Sagoey in the quarterfinals. But in the battle for the final, Bhagat and Ramadass went down to French duo Lucas Mazur and Faustine Noel 17-21, 13-21.
Deep Ranjan Bisoyee won the mens SU5 doubles bronze medal with his Indian partner Manoj Sarkar, defeating Indian opponents Pramod Bhagat and Sukant Kadam in their hard-fought quarterfinals 22-20, 12-21, 22-20. But in the semifinals, Bisoyee and Sarkar lost to compatriots Chirag Baretha and Raj Kumar 10-21, 15-21.
Three players from Odisha represented India in this tournament which commenced on March 1. Among them, Subhrajeet Maharana bowed out from the group stage in mens SU5 doubles category, losing both of their league matches. Maharana partnered with Mohammad Arwaz Ansari.
