  Hansda wins Natl Youth gold, qualifies for Asian meet

Odisha boy Bapi Hansda achieved multiple success on the third and last day of the 18th National Youth Athletics (Under-18) Championship at Mahathma Gandhi Stadium in Uduppi (Karnataka) by winning the 400m hurdles gold and qualifying for the Youth Asian Championship today.

Odisha bagged one gold and two silver on the final day to end campaign with a total of five medals in the National Youth Championship. The five medals featured two gold, two silver and one bronze.

An inmate of Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, Bapi Hansda won the gold with a time of 51.95 seconds, which was far better than the Youth Asian qualifying time of 53.34 seconds. The Youth Asian Championship is scheduled to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 20 to 23 April 2023.

 

The gold medal time of Hansda, however, was inferior to the Meet Record and National Record time of 51.49 and 50.81 seconds respectively. Durgesh Kumar Pal is the holder of both Meet and National Records, achieving the feats at Rachi in 2011 and at Singapore in 2010 respectively.

Mohammad Reyan Basha was another Odisha athlete who impressed in the National Youth Championship, capturing three medals. Winner of the boys 100m gold yesterday, Basha pocketed one silver each in 200m sprint and 1000m medley relay today.

Also a trainee of Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics HPC, Basha finished second in 200m, clocking 22.22 seconds. The gold in this event was secured by Madhya Pradesh runner Abhay Singh who also created a new Meet Record with a time of 21.87 seconds.

Basha was part of the four-member Odisha medley relay team that claimed the silver medal, clocking 1:57.55. Other three runners of the relay team were: Bapi Hansda, Rajendra Sidhu and Chinmay Nag.

Basha and Hansda thus became multiple medal winners for Odisha in the National Youth Championship. Odisha had won one gold and one bronze yesterday.

Among seven Odisha athletes, who participated in the National Youth Championship, Rameswari Gond finished sixth in girls 400m hurdles (1:11.83) and Sunita Santa stood eighth in girls 2000m steeplechase (8:39.93).
