  Six from Odisha selected for Borneo Sevens Rugby

As many as six players from Odisha have been selected in the Indian Women Team for the Borneo Sevens Rugby Championship, scheduled to be held at Eagles Rugby Club in Sandakan, Malaysia from 17 to 19 March 2023. However, Indian Rugby Football Association (IRFU) has not yet announced the team.

According to a press release from Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), the six Odisha players are: Hupi Majhi, Parbati Kisku, Mama Naik, Dumuni Marndi, Tarulata Naik and Nirmalya Rout. All six players belong to Bhubaneswar-based KISS.

 

The Indian women team was selected from a month-long coaching camp, which was organised by IRFU at Sports Authority of India (SAI), Kolkata and the team left for Malaysia today.

Indian women team has been placed in Group A along with Hong Kong China, Singapore National Development Team and Eagles NZ7s. Eight teams would compete in the women event. Other four teams are: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Briars Womens Club (Australia) and Labuan Wipers.

The mens event will also feature eight teams. But India has not fielded a team in the men category. Total prize money of the tournamnet is US $5,000 for both male and female categories.
