Thailand double crown for Bhagat; Deep bags bronze
14 May 2023

Paralympic and World champion Pramod Bhagat made Odisha and India proud yet again by winning both the mens SL3 singles and SL3-SL4 doubles gold medals in the Thailand Para Badminton International 2023 in Pattaya, Thailand today.

Odisha contributed another medal to the tally of India with Deep Ranjan Bisoyee bagging the bronze medal in mens SL3-SL4 doubles event with fellow Indian Manoj Sarkar as his partner.

Bhagat won the singles crown, defeating his strongest opponent Daniel Bethell of England in the final which turned out to be an anti-climax as the latter retired due to an injury after losing the first game 18-21.

Bhagat clinched a doubles crown by emerging doubles champion with Sukant Kadam as his partner. They prevailed over Indian opponents Nitesh Kumar and Tarun in the final 18-21, 21-14, 21-19.

This was the first singles title for Bhagat in 2023, who finished runner-up in the first three international tournaments of the year. It may be noted that all international para-badminton tournaments are being counted as 2024 Paralympic qualifiers.

Bisoyee and his Indian partner Sarkar claimed the doubles bronze medal by making it to the semifinals, where they, however, lost to compatriots Nitesh Kumar and Tarun 18-21, 10-21.

A total of four players from Odisha represented the country in the Thailand Para-Badminton International 2023. G Dillaswar Rao and Subhrajeet Maharana _ the other two Odisha shuttlers in the fray _ bowed out from the group stage. Odisha squad was accompanied by home coach Shiba Prasad Das.
