  KIUG: KIIT, Sambalpur athletes bag 5 gold, 1 silver

Athletes of KIIT Deemed to be University and Sambalpur University made Odisha proud, bagging five gold and one silver medal on the sixth day of the 3rd Khelo India University Games (KIUG) at Guru Gobind Singh Sports College in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh today.

With the six medals today, the total number of medals of three Odisha universities became 17, which comprises eight gold, eight silver and one bronze. Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, became the most medal winning university of the State with five gold and four silver. With a total of nine medals, KIIT ascended to the sixth position in medal tally of the ongoing Games.

KIIT students not only won four gold and one silver medals today, but also created two KIUG Records. Pragyan Prasanti Sahu and Vikrant Malik established the two records while winning gold medal in womens 100m hurdles and mens javelin throw.
 

Pragyan clocked 13.63 seconds to erase the previous record of 13.77 seconds. Vikrant, who hails from Haryana, set the new javelin record with an effort 80.00 metres, thus obliterating the old record of 76.64 metres.

Other two athletics gold medals for KIIT were captured by Susmita Tigga in womens 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:42.43 and by Ajay Kumar, who belongs to Haryana, in mens hammer throw with a performance of 58.27 metres.

The silver medal of the day for KIIT was secured by weightlifter Kumbheshwar Mallik in in mens 55kg class with a total lift of 212kg, which include 96kg in snatch and 116kg in clean & jerk. KIIT narrowly missed a bronze medal as their mens tennis team went down fighting to Gujarat University 1-2 in the match for the third and fourth positions.

Sambalpur University joined the KIUG medal tally, bagging one gold and one silver in athletics today. Manisha Merel pocketed the gold in womens long jump with an effort of 6.00 metres, while Swadhin Kumar Majhi claimed the silver in mens high jump with a leap of 2.11 metres.

Sambalpur University also stayed on course for a bronze medal mens hockey after losing their semifinal match against Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar 2-4 in shoot-out, which was applied after play in regulation period ended in 5-5 draw. Sambalpur University will play the bronze medal match against BVS Purvanchal University tomorrow.

Earlier, Utkal University bagged seven medals for Odisha and the seven medals included two gold, three silver and one bronze. Ace swimmer Pratyasa Ray was became the most medal winner of Odisha, garnering two gold and three silver.
