Plan afoot to set up Equestrian Centre of Excellence in Odisha
20 Apr 2023

If plans go in the right direction, leading sports-promoting State, Odisha could have a Centre of Excellence in equestrian too. The centre would not only provide training and coaching facilities to aspiring and active horse riders, but also help them win laurels for the State and country in equestrian and polo.

The concept of setting up of such a centre assumed importance during a meeting, featuring R Vineel Krishna, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha, horse-riding prodigy Rishita Samantaray and her parents _ Col Ashish Samantaray, Rohini Singh Deo _ at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar today.

While congratulating Rishita for winning one silver and one bronze medal at the Delhi Horse Show last month in Delhi, the Sports Secretary assured support to enable the promising horse rider achieve greater laurels for the State.

According to Col Samantaray, who is a highly experienced horse rider and polo player turned coach, the Sports Secretary showed keen interest on equestrian and enquired about scope of promoting the sport in the State.

“During discussion, we sought the support of the Odisha Government to set up an Equestrian Centre of Excellence in the State. If implemented, the centre could be another jewel in the crown of Odisha, which has already become the best sports promoting State in the country,’’ said Samantaray, who trains horse riders of the country.

“The response of the Sports Secretary was positive. He has asked us to come up with a proper proposal, featuring all requirements including infrastructure, horses, trainers and expenses. We already have a proposal with us. But it needs a bit of modification. I will consult with personnel in the Indian Army who have been dealing with equestrianism, revise it for Odisha and submit the final draft proposal as early as possible,’’ stated Col Samantaray.
