  Jr Men Hockey Asia Cup: India beat Pak, win 4th title

Defending champions India became the most successful nation in the Mens Junior (U-21) Asia Cup Hockey Tournament by emerging champions for the fourth time with 2-1 win over Pakistan in the final of the ninth edition at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah, Oman today.

Angad Bir Singh and Araijeet Singh Hundal scored the two goals for India, while Basharat Ali reduced the margin for Pakistan. India had previously won the title in 2004, 2008 and 2015 while Pakistan had emerged champions in 1988, 1992, 1996.

Korea won the bronze medal, defeating Malaysia by a 2-1 margin. India, Pakistan, Korea and Malaysia have qualified for the 13th FIH Hockey Mens Junior World Cup, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 5 to 16 December 2023.

 

Rehman Abdul of Pakistan and Kumpei Yasuda of Japan finished the tournament as the top goalscorers with nine goals apiece. Hockey India Executive Board announced a cash award of Rs 2 lakh each for players and Rs 1 lakh each for support staff.

Earlier in the semifinalos, India rode on a hat-trick by vice-captain Boby Singh Dhami to decimate South Korea 9-1. India qualified for the semifinals by emerging Pool-A toppers with 10 points from four matches. India won three matches, beating Chinese Taipei 18-0, Japan 3-1 and Thailand 17-0, and drew with Pakistan 1-1.

Three players from Odisha represented India in this tournament. They were: Amandeep Lakra, Sunit Lakra and Sudeep Chirmako. Uttam Singh led the 18-member Indian team with Boby Singh Dhami as his deputy.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS: Best Raising Goalkeeper: Mohammad Rafaizul (Malaysia). Best Player: Abdul Hanan Shahid (Pakistan). Rising Star Player: Ahtisham Aslam (Pakistan). Best Goalkeeper: Shashikumar Mohith Honnenahalli (India). Top Scorer: Abdul Rehman (Pakistan).
