  Hockey: India, Malaysia set up ACT gold medal clash

Host India barged into the final of the 7th Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament with a comprehensive 5-0 victory against reigning Asian Games champions Japan in the second semifinal at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai today.

Akashdeep Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Sumit and Karthi Selvam scored the five goals for India. Manpreet Singh was awarded as the Player of the Match. India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh reached a personal milestone by earning his 300th international cap in this match.

 

India will take on Malaysia in the gold medal match tomorrow. Malaysia continued superb run in the six-nation tournament by drubbing defending champions South Korea 6-2 in the first semifinal earlier in the day.

In another match of the day, Pakistan routed China 6-1 to finish fifth in the tournament, while China ended sixth and last. South Korea will meet Japan in the bronze medal match tomorrow.

RESULTS:

August 11 (Match 16): Pakistan (Muhammad Ammad 10-FG, 52-PC, Muhammad Khan 11-PC, 12-PC, Abdul Shahid 15-FG, Abdul Rana 55-FG) beat China (Benhai Chen 35-PC) 6-1. PoM: Umar Bhutta (Pakistan).

August 11 (Match 17, Semifinal): Malaysia (Kamal Azrai Abu 3-FG, Najmi Jazlan 9-FG, 21-PC, Faizal Saari 19-PC, Shello Silverius 47-FG, 48-FG) beat South Korea (Cheon Ji Woo 2-FG, Jonghyun Jang 14-PC) 6-2. PoM: Hafizuddin Othman (Malaysia).

August 11 (Match 18, Semifinal): India (Akashdeep Singh 19-FG, Harmanpreet Singh 23-PC, Mandeep Singh 30-FG, Sumit 39-FG, Karthi Selvam 51-FG) beat Japan 5-0. PoM: Manpreet Singh (India).
