Host India emerged champions of the 7th Mens Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament, edging out Malaysia 4-3 in the nerve wracking final at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai today.
Down 1-3 late in the third quarter, India made a stunning comeback to clinch victory with Akashdeep Singh scoring the match-winner in the 56th minute. This was the fourth title triumph for India, who had won their earlier three in 2011, 2016 and 2018. Asian Games champions won the bronze medal, trouncing defending champions South Korea 5-3 earlier in the day.
Hockey announced a cash award of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh each support staff of the victorious Indian team. Odisha defender Amit Rohidas was part of the victorious Indian team.
