  Tennis: Debasis, Aahaan win ITF, AITA doubles titles

Promising Odisha tennis players Debasis Sahoo and Aahaan Mishra added one more jewel to respective crowns, winning one international (Junior ITF) and all India (AITA) doubles title each in different tournaments in Zimbabwe and India on 18 August 2023.

Junior Davis Cupper Debasis secured the U-18 boys doubles crown with American partner Hanu Patel at the ITF J100 Tennis Tournament at Harare Sports Club in Harare, Zimbabwe. The fourth-seeded Indo-US pair beat Ghana-Burundi combination of Raphael Nil Ankrah and Allan Gatato in the final 6-2, 6-0.

 

This was the fourth International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior title for Dhenkanal-born and Bhubaneswar-based Debasis, who was also part of the Indian U-16 boys team that won the gold medal at the Junior Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying Tournament in New Delhi last year.

Aahaan won the All India doubles title with West Bengal partner Sankalp Kumar Sahani at the AITA U-16 Championship Series tournament at Raipur in Chattisgarh. They beat Maharashtra duo of Devraj Mandade and Saksham Bansali in the final 6-4, 3-6, 12-10.

This was the fourth AITA Junior title for Bhubaneswar-based Aahaan who trains at Odisha Tennis Academy, Kalinga Stadium, under the guidance of coach Santosh Mallik. Aahaan also participated singles event of the Raipur tournament and reached quarterfinals. He gained 20 AITA ranking points from this tournament.
