  Neeraj wins historic WC gold; Kishore finishes 5th with PB

Neeraj Chopra, the most successful athlete in the history of Indian sports, achieved another historic success when he won the mens javeline gold medal with a throw of 88.17 metre at the 19th World Athletics Championships on the concluding day in Budapest, Hungary tonight.

Neeraj secured the gold on his second attempt after fouling his first. The 25-year-old thrower, thus, became the first athlete from India to strike gold in any event at the World Athletics Championships. He also became the first Asian athlete to win the mens javelin gold at the World Championships.

His glittering gold was the only medal for India in Budapest. With this gold, Neeraj also became the javelin champion in all major international competitions. Earlier, he had won the gold medal in 2021 Olympic Games, 2022 Diamond League, 2018 Asian Games, 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2017 Asian Championships and 2016 South Asian Games.

 

This was the second World Championship medal for Neeraj, who had settled for silver medal at the 2022 edition in Oregon. Indian javelin throwers stole the show on the last day of the World Championships with Kishore Jena (Odisha) and DP Manu (Karnataka) finishing fifth and sixth with efforts of 84.77m and 84.14m respectively.

Jena, who hails from Brahmagiri area of Puri district, bettered his previous best of 84.38m which he had achieved at the Sri Lanka National Athletics Championship in Colombo on 29 July 2023. In the World final today, Jena started with started with 75.70m and bettered it with 82.82m in his second attempt. He achieved the new personal best of 84.77m in his fifth and penultimate attempt.

Asian throwers dominated the World javelin event with Commonwealth Games champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan winning the silver medal with a throw of 87.82m in his third attempt. This was also first ever World Championships medal for Pakistan. Jakub Vadlejch of Czech Republic secured the bronze medal, throwing the spear to a distance of 86.67m in his fifth attempt.
