  Womens Hockey 5s Asia Cup: India win gold medal

India won the gold medal in the inaugural Womens Hockey 5s Asia Cup, trouncing Thailand 7-2 in the final in Salalah, Oman today. The Indian team, featuring three players from Odisha, also qualified for the Womens Hockey 5s World Cup to be in Muscat, Oman from 24-31 January 2024.

While Thailand settled for the silver medal, Malaysia took the bronze, defeating Indonesia 2-1 in shoot out (Full time 4-4). Thailand and Malaysia also qualified for the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup 2024.

 

The three Odisha players in the Indian team were, Mariana Kujur, Ajmina Kujur and Dipi Monika Toppo. Led by Navjot Kaur, India won four matches in a row reach the final. They Malaysia 7-2, Japan 7-1 and Thailand 5-4 in Elite league to enter the semifinals, where they thrashed Malaysia 5-4.

For their triumph and excellent performance, Hockey India announced Rs 2 lakh for each player of the Indian women team and Rs 1 lakh each for the support staff.

INDIA RESULTS:

August 25 (Elite): India (Navjot Kaur 3-FG, 28-FG, Akshata Dhekale 4-FG, Dipi Monika Toppo 12-FG, 20-FG, Mariana Kujur 17-FG, Mahima Choudhary 27-FG) beat Malaysia (Wan Wan 7-FG, Zafirah Aziz 11-C) 7-2. PoM: Akshata Dhekale.

August 26 (Elite): India (Mahima Choudhary 7-FG, 30-FG, Akshata Dhekale 8-FG, Mariana Kujur 12-FG, Jyoti 23-FG, Dipi Monika Toppo 27-FG, Ajmina Kujur 30-FG) beat Japan (Risa Nakasechi 9-FG) 7-1. PoM: Bansari Solanki (India).

August 27 (Elite): India (Navjor Kaur 1-FG, Dipi Monika Toppo 1-FG, 7-FG, Mahima Choudhary 20-C, Ajmina Kujur 30-FG) beat Thailand (Anongnat Piresram 3-C, Natthakarn Aunjai 10-FG, 14-FG, Suwapat Konthong 19-FG) 5-4. PoM: Siraya Yimkrajang (Thailand).

August 28 (Semifinal): India (Navjot Kaur 7-FG, 10-FG, 17-FG, Mariana Kujur 9-C, 12-FG, Mahima Choudhary 14-FG, Jyoti 21-FG, 26-FG, Dipi Monika Toppo 22-FG) beat Malaysia (Zati Muhamad 4-C, 5-FG, Dian Nazeri 10-FG, 20-C, Zarirah Aziz 16-C) 9-5. PoM: Navjot Kaur.

August 28 (Final): India (Mariana Kujur 2-FG, 8-FG, Dipi Monika Toppo 7-FG, Jyoti 10-FG, 27-FG, Navjot Kaur 23-FG, Mahima Choudhary 29-FG) beat Thailand (Kunjira Inpa 5-FG, Kornkanok Sanpoung 5-C) 7-2. PoM: Jyoti.
