  Junior Boys NFC: Win in vain as Odisha bow out

Host Odisha beat Chhattisgarh 3-2 in their third and last Group-C match of the Junior Boys National Football Championship (Tier-1) for Dr B C Roy Trophy at Odisha Football Academy Ground, OSAP 7th Battalion in Bhubaneswar today. Shankha Shekhar Hembram, Pintu Oram and Mohan Guntha scored the three goals for Odisha.

But the fighting win proved in vain as Odisha bowed out of the championship, finishing second in their group with six points from three matches. After starting campaign with a thumping 4-0 win over Haryana, Odisha suffered a 4-1 defeat against Uttar Pradesh in the next game.

 

Uttar Pradesh trounced Haryana 6-0 in their last match to emerge Group-C toppers with nine points and qualified for the semifinals. Jharkhand (Group-A), West Bengal (Group-B) and Goa (Group-D) also qualified for semifinals.

Among Odisha players, Shankha Shekhar Hembram dazzled as a forward, scoring five goals in three games, including a hat-trick against Haryana. The championship was hosted by Football Association of Odisha (FAO) and Department of Sports & Youth Services (DSYS), Govt of Odisha, under the aegis of All India Football Federation (AIFF).

State Sports Director Siddhartha Das inaugurated the championship as chief guest. DSYS Joint Secretary Bijayananda Nayak was the guest of honour for the opening ceremony. AIFF Executive Committee Member Avijit Paul and FAO Vice President Dillip Kumar Sahoo were present on the occasion.

ODISHA RESULT:

September 5 (Group-C): Odisha (Shankha Shekhar Hembram 3, 49, 85, Akash Sahoo 14) beat Haryana 4-0. PoM: Shankha Shekhar Hembram.
September 7 (Group-C): Odisha (Shankha Shekhar Hembram 23-P) lost to Uttar Pradesh (Niranjan Shahi 27, 75, Abhinash Thapa 45+1, Mohammad Nadeem 59) 1-4. PoM: Abhinash Thapa.
September 9 (Group-C): Odisha (Shankha Shekhar Hembram 3, Pintu Oram 9, Mohan Guntha 63) beat Chhattisgarh (Virendra Kumar 38, Kewat Kola 47) 3-2. PoM: Budhram Boter (Chhattisgarh).
