  Indian GP-5 Athletics: Kishore, Srabani win titles

Odisha athletes achieved notable success on the opening day of the twoday Indian Grand Prix 5, winning two tittes and securing two positions and one third position at the Sector-7 Sports Complex in Chandigarh today. The event is being organised by Athletics Federation of India (AFI).

Javelin sensation Kishore Kumar Jena, who finished a creditable fourth at the recent World championship in Budapest, won the title with confidence, throwing the spear to a distance of 82.53 metre. Interestingly, Samarjeet Singh Malhi (Rajasthan), the current coach of Kishore, also competed with his ward and finished 18th with a throw of 60.13m.

 

Srabani Nanda, the 32-year-old untiring women sprinter became the fastest athlete of the meet, winning the 100m sprint with a time of 11.77 seconds. Olympian Srabani will also compete in the relay event tomorrow.

Among other successful Odisha athletes, Swagat Behera and Swadhin Majhi secured second position in mens triple jump and high jump respectively, while Nikhil Das finished third in mens high jump.

Swagat and Swadhin won the second position with efforts of 13.94 metre and 2.06 metre respectively. Nikhil cleared a height of 1.95 metre to claim the third position behind Swadhin.

Amiya Kumar Mallick, the National record holder in mens 100m sprint, put up fighting performance to finish fourth with a time of 10.75 seconds.
