  Bodybuilding: Amit, Jagannath win Asian gold, silver

Odisha bagged one gold and one bronze medal in the 55th Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championship which concluded in Kathmandu, Nepal on 7 September 2023. Amit Kumar Bhuyan won the gold medal in mens 70kg weight class, while Jagannath Khuntia secured the bronze in mens 75kg weight category.

The gold medal for Bhubaneswar bodybuilder Amit assumed added significance as he bagged it on his international debut. On the other hand, this was the second international competition and first medal for Jagannath who also belongs to Bhubaneswar.

 

Jagannath had finished fourth at the 13th World Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championship 2022 in Phuket, Thailand. He also has the reputation of winning two gold and one bronze medal in National and Eastern India competitions.

A total of four bodybuilders from Odisha represented India in the 55th Asian championship, which commenced earlier on September 1. Balal Khan (Ganjam) and Papun Kumar Swain (Bhubaneswar) were the other competitors from Odisha.

Balal finished fifth in mens 70kg category. The State squad was accompanied by Odisha Body Building Association (OBBA) president Sumitra Tripathy.
