  Odisha gymnasts Rakesh, Tapan selected for Asiad 2023

Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) today announced a nine-member Indian artistic gymnastics squad, including two from Odisha, for the Asian Games 2023, scheduled in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8. The two Odisha gymnasts are Rakesh Kumar Patra and Tapan Mohanty (both from Puri).

The squad, featuring five men and four women, was announced after conclusion of the selection trials, which was held at the Gymnastics High Performance Centre, Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on July 11 and 12.

Olympian Dipa Karmakar made it to the squad as she topped the selection trials with an all-round score of 47.05. The 29-year-old Dipa has returned to action after serving a 21-month doping ban, which ended on July 10.
 

India has only won a solitary gymnastics medal at the Asian Games. Ashish Kumar clinched the bronze in floor exercise at Guangzhou 2010. Ashish Kumar was part of the selection trials in Bhubaneswar but failed to qualify.

The selection trial for the upcoming Asian Games was organized by the GFI, in association with Sports & Youth Services Department, Government Odisha.

The State Government has established the Odisha AM/NS Gymnastics High-Performance Centre with Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India as partner. Besides the HPC, three academies to develop the discipline at a grassroots level have been set up in Puri, Jeypore and Rourkela. Ashok Kumar Mishra from Odisha is the chief coach of the HPC.

INDIAN SQUAD:
Men: Yogeshwar Singh (Haryana), Rakesh Kumar Patra and Tapan Mohanty (both Odisha), Gaurav Kumar (Uttar Pradesh), Satyajit Mondal (West Bengal).
Women: Dipa Karmakar (Tripura), Pranati Das (Railways/West Bengal), Pranati Nayak (Railways/West Bengal), Protistha Samanta (Tripura).
