Professional Chess Training Academy PRO-CHESS-TA launched
20 Jul 2023

On the occasion of International Chess Day, the Department of Sports and Youth Services, Government of Odisha, launched a Professional Chess Training Academy _ PRO-CHESS-TA _ at its Nayapally Complex in Bhubaneswar. Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera inaugurated the academy and dedicated it to the chess enthusiasts of the state.

According to a DSYS release, the academy will serve as a milestone facility for providing budding chess players an environment to learn, grow and excel. The institution will be led by Fide Trainer and International Master Swayangsu Satyapragyan, who will mentor the students in developing their talent to a completely new level.

Speaking at the inauguration programme, Sports Minister Behera said, “We have conducted several programs earlier to promote chess and the response from children and parents were very encouraging. This along with the performance of our elite players at the national and international level has boosted us to set up this academy.”

Expressing his appreciation to the State Government for establishment of PRO-Chess-TA, All India Chess Federation (AICF) Joint Secretary Ranjan Mohanty shared, “The launch of this chess academy, located in the heart of the city, signals a bright future for chess in Odisha, and it promises to nurture and empower young minds to make their mark in the national and global chess arena, representing the State and the country.”

IM Satyapragyan said, “I am grateful to the vision of the State Government to make Odisha the biggest chess literate State in this country. In my entire professional career never have I come across a state-of-art-academy having all the latest technology as well as a dedicated library for students.”

“I want to thank the government for confiding in me such a massive and important responsibility for supporting Odisha talent and making them masters of chess,” he added.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by State Sports Director Siddhartha Das, DSYS Joint Secretary Shubhranshu Mishra, All Odisha Chess Association Secretary Debabrata Dhatta and reputed chess players including IM Padmini Rout, WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty, Utkal Ranjan Sahoo, WIM Saina Salonika and FM Soumya Ranjan Mishra.

On this occasion, the Sports Minister felicitated Padmini with a cash award of Rs 60,000 for winning the title in the 49th National Womens Chess Championship, which was held earlier this month in Ahmedabad.
