  Debasis wins Ghana Open ITF Junior doubles title

Odisha Junior Davis Cupper Debasis Sahoo won the boys doubles title in the ITF J100 Ghana Open Junior Tennis Tournament, which concluded at National Tennis Centre, Accra, Ghana on 14 October 2023. Nikola Jovic from Serbia was his partner in the triumph.

In the keenly-contested final match, top seeds Sahoo and Jovic defeated the Nigeria-Denmark combination of David Ekpenyong and Christian Gronfeldt-Sorensen 7-6(1), 6-4. Earlier in the semifinals, the Indo-Serb pair faced stiff a challenge before overcoming the Great Britain-Serbia duo of Maxmilian Carrier and Mateya Stanisavljevic 7-6(2), 7-6(4).

On their way to the semifinals, Sahoo and Jovic beat Nigerian pair of Daniel Adeleye and Ezekiel Azi 7-6(2), 6-2 in the first round and Spain-Canada combination of David Aguiar Johansson and Felix Roussel 6-3, 6-3 in quarterfinals.

Sahoo also put up a creditable performance in singles event in which he reached semifinals before losing to his doubles partner and second seed Nikola Jovic 7-5, 2-6, 4-6. Fourth seed Sahoo reached the last-four stage, winning three matches in a row.

A trainee of Bhubaneswar-based Altevol Tennis Academy, Sahoo beat Lameck Bagerbaseh (Ghana) 7-6(5), 6-4 in the first round, Joseph Franklin Jimoh (Nigeria) in second round and Daniel Adeleye (Nigeria) 7-5, 6-1 in quarterfinals.
