Karnataka swimmer Srihari Nataraj (8 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) was adjudged the Best Male Athlete while gymnasts Sanyukta Prasen Kale of Maharashtra and Pranati Nayak of Odisha (4 gold, 1 silver each) were adjudged the Best Female Athletes.
Bagging a total of 58 medals in Goa, Odisha bettered its previous best haul of 26 medals at the 36th Natinal Games held in Gujarat from 29 September to 12 October 2022. With the 26 medals, which included four gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze, Odisha finished 17th in the medal tally.
Odisha Olympic Association had fielded a 275-member State contingent in the 36th edition. Odisha contingent, featuring more than 300 sportspersons for 31 disciplines, was sent by the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha. But the names of the Odisha sportspersons were not disclosed.
But the website of Goa National Games, featured names of sizeable number of players from other states in Odisha contingent. The imported players secured around 15 medals for Odisha. Prominent among them was West Bengal gymnast Pranati Nayak who garnered four gold and one silver.
Woman cycling ace Swasti Singh was second most successful sportsperson of the Odisha contingent, winning one gold and three bronze medals. Woman Olympic sprinter Srabani Nanda was another outstanding Odisha achiever, winning 200m gold and 100m silver.
Odisha bagged highest number of nine medals in kayaking & canoeing, followed by eight in artistic gymnastics, seven in athletics, five in sqay martial arts, four in pencak silat, three in lawn bowls and two in swimming.
In team sports, Odisha women captured football gold defeating Manipur in final. Odisha women also emerged champions in rugby sevens, while both the men and women kho-kho teams secured silver.
But Odisha came cropper in hockey despite spending thousands of crores in building world class stadiums, setting up high performance centres and hosting most of the national and international competitions, including two World Cups.
