11 Nov 2023

Odisha junior tennis international Sohini Mohanty gave her state and the country a nice Diwali gift as she spearheaded Team India to gold medal triumph at the IC Rod Laver Junior Challenge Worldwide Finals at La Jolla Beach Tennis Club in San Diego, USA today.

Bhubaneswar girl Sohini was part of the four-member Indian U-16 team that emerged champions by winning all of their five matches in the Worldwide Finals held from November 6 to 11. India beat Great Britain 4-2, USA 5-1, Italy 4-2, South Africa 5-1 and Argentina 4-2.

Manas Dhamne, Rushil Khosla and Asmi Adkar were the other three players of the Indian team, which featured two boys and two girls. Vikram Anand accompanied the team as the captain.

The Worldwide Finals was played in a league format, featuring winners of six zonal qualifying competitions. Each match featured four singles, two doubles and an optional mixed doubles in case of a tie. India qualified for the Finals by emerging champions in the Asia/Oceania Zone Qualifiers, held in Tokyo, Japan in June this year.

IC Rod Laver Junior Challenge is an international tournament, organised by International Tennis Club (IC) in the name of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver. The 85-year-old Laver was present at the Worldwide finals and presented the trophies.
