  East Bengal lift Kalinga Super Cup; Odisha FC runners-up

Kolkata giants East Bengal FC emerged champions in the Kalinga Super Cup Football Tournament, dethroning defending champions Odisha FC 3-2 in the thrilling final at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. By winning the Kalinga Super Cup, East Bengal FC became eligible to play in the ACL 2 Preliminary Stage of AFC 2023-24 season.

East Bengal received the winners cheque of Rs 25 lakhs, while runners-up Odisha FC were given Rs 15 lakhs. This was the first major title in 12 years for East Bengal, who had won their last one in 2012 Federation Cup at the Kanchenjunga Stadium in Siliguri.

Earlier in the semifinals, East Bengal beat Jamshedpur FC 2-0, while local favourites Odisha FC edged out Mumbai City FC 1-0. Bhubaneswar-based Odisha FC qualified for the semifinals, winning all three of their league matches in Group D. They defeated Bengaluru FC 1-0, Inter Kashi 3-0 and FC Goa 3-2.

 

A total of 16 teams (12 from Indian Super League and 4 from I-League) participated in the tournament which was earlier known as Super Cup. Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha is hosting the tournament, under the aegis of All India Football Federation. Odisha FC emerged champions in the previous edition, defeating Bengaluru FC final held in Kozhikode, Kerala.

INDIVIDUAL AWARDS (Rs 2.5 lakh each): Best Goalkeeper: Lalthuammawia Ralte (Odisha FC). Best Defender: Hijazi Maher (East Bengal FC). Best Midfielder: Ahmed Jahouh (Odisha FC). Highest Scorer (5 goals): Cleiton Silva (East Bengal FC). Player of the Tournament: Isak Vanlalruatfela (Odisha FC).
