  Pyari, Juli represent India in Turkish Womens Cup

Indian senior womens football team, featuring Odisha forward Pyari Xaxa and defender Juli Kishan, finished runners-up in the Turkish Womens Cup International Tournament, which concluded at Gold City Sports Complex in Alanya, Turkey today.

The hope of Indian senior women winning their first-ever title outside SAFF region proved in vain as they lost to Kosovo 1-0 in their third and last league match today. India forward Manisha Kalyan was adjudged as the best midfielder of the tournament.

Earlier in their first two matches, India beat Estonia 4-3 and Hong Kong 2-0. The win against Estonia was the first for India against an European country in an official football match. Pyari scored the third goal for India in the 79th minute.

 

Three times before this, India played Belarus, Ukraine and Romania, only to end up on the losing side. The All India Football Federationsent a 23-member National team for the Turkish Womens Cup . This is the third time (after 2019 and 2021) that India competed in Turkish Womens Cup.

RESULTS OF INDIA MATCHES:

21 February 2024: India (Manisha Kalyan 17, 81, Indumathi Kathiresan 62, Pyari Xaxa 79) beat Estonia (Lisette Tammik 32, Vlada Kubassova 88, Mari Liis Lillemae 90) 4-3.
24 February 2024: India (Anju Tamang 19, Soumya Guguloth 79) beat Hong Kong 2-0.
27 February 2024: India lost to Kosovo (Ereleta Memeti 90+2) 0-1.
