  Odisha Masters 2023: India shuttlers win two titles

Host India bagged two out of five titles in the Odisha Masters BWF Tour Super 100 International Badminton Tournament, which was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, Odisha from 12 to 17 December 2023. Other three titles were claimed by Chinese Taipei, Japan and Indonesia.

Sathish Kumar Karunakaran emerged mens singles champion, defeating Ayush Shetty in the all-Indians final. India secured the other title with Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto beating Indonesian opponents in the mixed-doubles summit clash.

 

Former World No 1 Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) was the top star of the tournament and she lived up to her reputation by winning the womens singles crown in 2-1 sets. Among other Indian shuttlers, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek K settled as mens doubles runners-up. Indian duo of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also finished runners-up in womens doubles.

Badminton Association of India organised the tournament with the support of the Government of Odisha and Odisha State Badminton Association. Only two shuttlers from Odisha were eligible to compete in the tournament.

Odisha duo, Rutaparna Panda and her younger sister Swetaparna put up impressive performances in womens doubles. They reached quarterfinals before losing to Indonesian pair Jesita Putri Miantoro and Febi Setianingrum 9-21, 15-21.

The Panda siblings started the campaign with a stunning 21-19, 17-21, 21-17 win over eighth-seeded Indian opponents Ashwini Bhatt and Shikha Gautam. They next beat Indian pair of Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker 21-12, 14-21, 21-19 to book their berth in the quarterfinals.

Mens doubles: Lin Bing-Wei & Su Ching Heng (Chinese Taipei) beat Krishna Prasad Garaga & Sai Pratheek K (India) 20-22, 21-18, 21-17).
Womens singles: Nozomi Okuhara (Japan) beat Lo Sin Yan Happy (Hong Kong) 21-7, 21-23, 22-20.
Womens doubles: Meilysa Trias Puspitasari & Rachel Allessya Rose (Indonesia) beat Tanisha Crasto & Ashwini Ponnappa (India) 21-14, 21-17.
Mixed doubles: Dhruv Kapila & Tanisha Crasto (India) beat Hee Yong Kai Terry & Tan Wei Han Jessica (Indonesia) 17-21, 21-19, 23-21.
