  Hockey 5s World Cup: Indian women win silver medal

Indian women hockey team, featuring three players from Odisha, settled for the silver medal in the 1st FIH Hockey 5s World Cup, which concluded in Muscat, Oman today. The Netherlands won the gold medal defeating India 7-2 in the final. Poland secured the bronze medal with a 4-2 victory over South Africa.

India reached the final, beating New Zealand 11-1 and South Africa 6-3 in the quarter-final and semifinal respectively. Led by Rajani Etimarpu, India qualified for the quarter-finals by winning all of their three league matches in Pool C. They beat Poland 5-4, United States 7-3 and Namibia 7-2.

 

The three Odisha players in the Indian women team were: defender Jyoti Chhatri, mid-fielder Mariana Kujur and forward Ajmina Kujur. Among the three, Mariana scored six goals, while Ajmina and Jyoti contributed three and two goals respectively. Jyoti scored one of the two goals for India in the final.

Hockey India announced a cash reward of Rs 3 lakhs for each player of the Indian women team and Rs 1.5 lakhs each for support staff. However, no player from Odisha could get a place in the Indian mens team that finished fifth in the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup, which was also held in Muscat from 28 to 31 January 2024.

(Pool-C match): India (Mahima Chaudhary 17-CG, Mariana Kujur 20-FG, 22-FG, Deepika Soreng 23-FG, 25-FG, Mumtaz Khan 27-FG, Ajmina Kujur 29-FG) beat United States (Jacqueline Sumfest 4-FG, 18-FG, Linnea Gonzales 14-FG) 7-3.

(Pool-C match): India (Chaudhary 3-FG, 19-FG, Deepika Soreng 4-FG, 26-FG, Rutaja Dadaso Pisal 22-FG, Akshata Abaso Dhekale 23-FG, Ajmina Kujur 28-FG) beat Namibia (Jivanka Kruger 18-CG, Anthea Coetzee 30-FG) 7-2.

26 January 2024 (Quarter-final): India (Deepika Soreng 2-FG, 25-FG, 29-FG, , Rutaja Dadaso Pisal 9-FG, 22-FG, 26-FG, 28-FG, Mumtaz Khan 10-FG, 11-FG, Mariana Kujur 13-FG, 14-FG) beat New Zealand (Oriwa Hepi 2-FG) 11-1.

26 January 2024 (Semi-final): India (Akshata Abaso Dhekale 7-FG, Mariana Kujur 11-FG, Mumtaz Khan 21-FG, Rutaja Dadaso Pisal 23-FG, Jyoti Chhatri 25-FG, Ajmina Kujur 26-FG) beat South Africa (Teshawn De La Rey 5-FG, Toni Marks 8-FG, Dirkie Chamberlain 29-FG) 6-3.

27 January 2024
(Final): India (Jyoti Chhatri 20-FG, Rutaja Dadaso Pisal 23-FG) lost to Netherlands (Jannek Van De Venne 2-FG, 14-FG, Benet Van Der Veldt 4-FG, 8-FG, Lana Kalse 11-FG, 27-FG, Sosha Benninga 13-FG) 7-2.
