About card games and their footings in Odisha
20 May 2024

Card game is known as one of the oldest pastimes of the world, believed to have originated from China during the ninth century. There are several variations of this recreational activity, among which bridge is recognised as an indoor sport discipline all over the globe.

Bridge Federation of India (BFI) is the apex governing body in India, recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. The 2018 Asian Games was the first edition when bridge was introduced in a major multi-nation event. In the Hangzhou Asian Games last year, the Indian team made history by winning a silver medal. BFI also has its State unit in Odisha.

However, Twenty-nine, Bray, Rummy and Solitaire are considered as popular card-games in Odisha. But card games as sport disciplines have not been as popular as Chess because of its connection with gambling. Apart from the state governing body in bridge, Cuttack District Bray Association (CDBA) perhaps is the only other organisation promoting card games in Odisha.

Under the guidance of president Asirbad Behera and secretary Avinna Sundar Rout, CDBA is organising the Cuttack District Bray Championship at Dagarpada, Cuttack from May 19. A total of 110 teams are vying for honours in this doubles tournament, which would continue for 40 days.
