  State Junior Athletics Meet: New talents hog limelight

Many new talents hogged the limelight, winning medals on the opening day of the 70 th Odisha State Junior Athletics Championship at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today. The opening day featured competitions in a total of 18 events in boys and girls 14, 16 and 18 years age groups.

Among known names, National medal winner Ommkar Prasad Nanda (Cuttaqck) bagged the gold in boys-18 shot put with a throw of 17.49 metres. Tejaswani Dhal (Jajpur) and Alokika Swain (Jagatsinghpur) were other notable achievers of the day, winning one gold and one silver each in girls-16 shot put and javelin throw.

 

Organised jointly by the Department of Sports & Youth Services, Government of Odisha and Odisha Athletics Association, the three-day State Junior Championship is being conducted separately for the first time. Earlier, both junior and senior state meets were taking place together.

RESULTS (Day-1):

BOYS-14: Triathlon-A:
1. Ayush Mallick (Jajpur), 2. Arpit Pati (Bargarh), 3. Vijeet Kumar Mallick (Khurda). Triathlon-B: 1. Dev Sarkar (Bhubaneswar), 2. Soumya Ranjan Mantri (Keonjhar), 3. Anubhav Bhue (Bargarh). Triathlon-C: 1. Akash Bagarty (Sundargarh), 2. Yash Mohanty (Kendrapara), 3. Abins Madkami (Koraput).

BOYS-16: High jump: 1. Satyasagar Padhan (Sambalpur), 2. Anshu Bag (Sundargarh) and Udit Kumar Santi (Keonjhar). Shot put: 1. Dasmat Murmu (Keonjhar), 2. Jayadeep Narayan (Keonjhar), 3. Soumya Ranjan Priyadarshi (Bhubaneswar). Javelin: 1. Debastuti Mohanty (Jajpur), 2. Satya Ranjan Nayak (Balasore), 3. Pritish Kumar Swain (Keonjhar).

BOYS-18: High jump: 1. Sagar Ekka (Sundargarh), 2. Amar Yadav (Jharsuguda), 3. Janakikant Naik (Kalahandi). Shot put: 1. Ommkar Prasad Nanda (Cuttack), 2. Rupam Kumar Khuntia (Balasore), 3. Gopal Pamia (Malkangiri). Javelin: 1. Somanath Singh (Cuttack), 2. Mukesh Xess (Sundargarh), 3. Basudev Malik (Malkangiri).

GIRLS-14: Triathlon-A: 1. Resma Behera (Kalahandi), 2. Kuni Rajgond (Nabarangpur), 3. Laxmi Rani Kerai (Bhubaneswar). Triathlon-B: 1. L Snigdha (Nabarangpur), 2. Samikshya Smaranika (Jajpur), 3. Kunikaa Laguri (Khurda). Triathlon-C: 1. Lipsa Pradhan (Bhubaneswar), 2. Sasmita Bhoi (Cuttack), 3. Manisha Baskey (Khurda).

GIRLS-16: Long jump: 1. Parbati Hansdah (Bhubaneswar), 2. Tanmayee Singh (Jagatsinghpur), 3. Aruna Barik (Bargarh). Shot put: 1. Tejaswani Dhal (Jajpur), 2. Alokika Swain (Jagatsinghpur), 3. Rajashree Swain (Bhubaneswar). Javelin: 1. Alokika Swain (Jagatsinghpur), 2. Tejaswani Dhal (Jajpur), 3. Subhadra Jerari (Nabarangpur).

GIRLS-18: Long jump: 1. Sanju Hantal (Koraput), 2. Sadhana Pradhan (Bhubaneswar), 3. Amisha Pri Lenka (Jagatsinghpur). Shot put: 1. Ankita Mohapatra (Cuttack), 2. Deepa Singh (Mayurbhanj), 3. Sasmita Behera (Bhubaneswar). Javelin: 1. Sumitra Pangi (Sundargarh), 2. Atulya Minz (Sundargarh), 3. Bhumisuta Deheri (Nabarangpur).
