  Yashita Rout crowned State womens chess champion

Yashita Rout won her maiden title in the Odisha State Women Chess Championship, which was organised by All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) with the support of the State Government-run professional chess academy, Prochessta, in Bhubaneswar from 11 to 13 June 2024.

A multiple international medallist, Yashita logged six points out of a possible seven, winning five games and drawing two. In the thrilling final round, she triumphed over tournament leader Pratyasha Jena. Both Yashita and Pratyasha have been training at the Processta, under the guidance of IM Swayangsu Satyapragyan.

 

Ten-time champion Smaraki Mohanty also ended with six points, but settled as runner-up on the basis of Buchholz tie-break. Pratyasha Jena and Jayalakshmi Sahoo finished third and fourth respectively, each with 5.5 points. The top four finishers qualified to represent Odisha in the National Women Chess Championship to be held later this year.

The prize-presentation ceremony was graced by Prochessta Director Shubransu Mishra as chief guest. State Sports Department OSD, Siddhartha Sankar Sahu and hockey Olympian Lazarus Barla were present as the chief speaker and guest of honour respectively. Conducted by international arbiter Bhabesh Mohanty, the three-day State championship attracted 90 players.
