All India Ranking Badminton: Tanvi clinches double crown
17 Jun 2024

Budding Odisha shuttler Tanvi Patri clinched a double crown by winning both the U-15 and U-17 girls singles titles in the Yonex-Sunrise All India Sub Junior (U15 & U17) Ranking Badminton Tournament, which took place at JSK-Chetan Anand Sports Centre in Hyderabad, Telangana from 10 to 17 June 2024.

Reigning National sub-junior girls singles champion Tanvi claimed the two titles, winning six matches in each age category. Seeded second in U-15 singles, the Odisha girl emerged champion, winning all of her six matches in straight games. In U-17 singles, sixth seed Tanvi dropped only two games in her six matches.

This was the second All-India Sub-junior Ranking double crown of the year for Tanvi, who bagged the earlier double in Goa in May this year. The promising Odisha girl was set to represent India in the Asia Junior (U-19) Badminton Championship later this month in Indonesia. But the host country did not accept her entry, citing a strange rule.

“As per the prospectus, the minimum age for all players must be 14 years old. Since the date of birth of Tanvi Patri is 14 April 2011 (below 14 years), she is not eligible to participate this year,’’ Badminton Indonesia replied to a query by Badminton Association of India.

But the missed opportunity, however, has not dampened the spirit of Tanvi and the trainee of Bangalore-based Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy is determined to compete in the Asai Junior next year.
