  FIDE World Cup: Odisha boy Sattwik wins U-8 bronze medal

Odisha boy Sattwik Swain made the state and the country proud by winning the bronze medal in the Under-8 Open category of the FIDE Chess World Cup (Under 8-12) in Batumi, Georgia. In the final stage, Sattwim beat Khuduzade Azad of Azerbaijan 1.5-0.5.

Bhubaneswar boy Sattwik beat Azad in the first game, while the second game between the two ended in a draw. Sattwit qualified for the final stage after finishing second in Group-A, scoring 6.5 points, winning six games and drawing one. He beat Murillo Bernal Gael Mauricio (Mexico), Guo Ziming (China), Divith Reddy Adulla (India), Baranov Prokhor (FIDE), Protopopescu Luca (France), Elemes Nurmukhamed (Kazakhstan) and drew with Ulan Rizat (Kazakhstan).

 

A total of 288 players from 37 countries participated in the FIDE World Cup (Under 8, 10 & 12) which was organized for the first time from June 22. The competition was conducted in two stages. Stage 1 was a seven-round Swiss System with two groups of 24 players each. In the Final Stage, players who finished in the same position in each group played against each other.

This was the maiden international tournament for Sattwik, who studies at DAV School, Chandrasekharpur and takes chess coaching from Biswajit Ray at Kings Chess Centre. Son of Biswajit Swain and Sonam Sarita Mohanty, Sattwik started his FIDE World Cup campaign with a starting rank of eight and a rating of 1567.
