  National Open Athletics: Lalu, relay team win 2 gold for Odisha

Odisha male sprinters, spearheaded by 21-year-old Lalu Prasad Bhoi, have won two gold medals in the 63rd National Open Athletics Championships which is being held at Sree Kanteerava Outdoor Stadium in Bangalore, Karnataka from 30 August to 2 September 2024.

Odisha has won four medals so far with women hurdler Pragyan Prasanti Sahu and the State women 4x100m relay team securing one silver and one bronze respectively. A total of 25 athletes, including 10 women, are representing Odisha in the last National championship of the year.

Bhoi emerged as the fastest man of the four-day championship by winning the 100m gold with a time of 10.46 seconds on the second day. He ran a well-judged race to outclass more experienced runners, including Amlan Borgohain (Railways), who finished fourth.

 

Manikanta H of SSCB finished second at 10.48 seconds while Siva B of Railway took the third spot (10.50 seconds). Surprisingly, Chhattisgarh star sprinter Animesh Kujur, who is now representing Odisha, did not compete in the 100m event.

Meanwhile, Bhoi clinched a double today as he helped Odisha grab the gold medal in mens 4x100m relay with a time of 39.65 seconds. Amiya Kumar Mallick, Abhinash Sahu and Animesh Kujur were the other three runners of the Odisha relay team.

Pragyan Sahu won the silver medal in women 100m hurdles, clocking 13.45 seconds. Her Odisha statemate Sabita Toppo finished fourth with a time of 14.14 seconds. Odisha women 4x100m relay team, featuring Olympian Srabani Nanda, Sukhi Baskey Marymukta Sureng and Binati Behera claimed the bronze medal, clocking 45.93 seconds.
