  National Open Athletics: Odisha cap campaign with 6 medals

Odisha bagged a total of six medals, including two on the final day in the 63rd National Open Athletics Championships, which concluded at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore today. The six medals include two gold, two silver and two bronze.

Olympian Srabani Nanda secured one silver medal today in women 200m sprint, clocking 23.83 seconds. This was the second medal for Srabani, who was part of the Odisha women 4x100m relay team that bagged the bronze yesterday.

The other medal for Odisha on the last day was claimed by Susmita Tigga. A trainee of Bhubaneswar-based Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre, Susmita won the bronze in women 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:43.52.

 

Services long-jumper Ancy Sojan walked away with the best female athlete award for her gold winning efforts of 6.71m. Tamil Nadu Nithin sprinter Nithin was awarded as the best male athlete of the championship. He won the 200m gold with a time of 20.66 seconds, which was also a meet record. Previous time of 20.74 seconds was set by Animesh Kujur in 2023.

Yesterday, Odisha sprinter Lalu Prasad Bhoi emerged as the fastest man of the meet, winning the 100m gold medal in 10.46 seconds. Odisha men 4x100m relay team, featuring Lalu Prasad Bhoi, Amiya Kumar Mallick, Abhinash Sahu and Animesh Kujur captured the gold with a time of 39.65 seconds.

Pragyan Prasanti Sahu secured one silver medal for Odisha in women 100m hurdles, clocking 13.45 seconds, while the Odisha 4x100m women relay team, consisting of Srabani Nanda, Sukhi Baskey, Marymukta Soreng and Binati Behera pocked the bronze with a time of 45.93 seconds.
