  Mens Asian Champions Trophy Hockey: India retain title

Indian Men Hockey Team successfully defended their Asian Champions Trophy title, clinching a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts China in the final at the Moqi Hockey Training Base, China Daur Ethnic Park, Hulunbuir today. Jugraj Singh scored decisive goal in the 51st minute, making India the most successful team in the history of the tournament with a record-extending five titles.

India also became the only team to win the title five times, having retained the trophy for the second consecutive edition after their triumph in 2023. India had previously achieved back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2018. Hockey India announced a cash prize of INR 3 lakhs for each player and INR 1.5 lakhs for each support staff member.

 

Pakistan won the bronze medal with a 5-2 win over South Korea. Earlier n the semifinals, India thrashed South Korea 2-1, while China edged out Pakistan 2-0 in shootout after play in the regulation time ended in 1-1 draw.

India qualified for the semifinals by winning all of their five matches at the league stage. They beat hosts China 3-0, Japan 5-1, Malaysia 8-1, South Korea 3-1 and Pakistan 2-1. India captain and drag-flick ace Harmanpreet Singh was awarded as the Player of the Tournament with seven goals to his name.

Harmanpreet completed his double century of international goals converting a brace of penalty corners in the league match against South Korea. Defender Amit Rohidas represented the 18-member Indian team as the only player from Odisha, the State which is the sponsors of the Indian National Hockey Teams.

14 September 2024 (League match): India (Harmanpreet Singh 13-PC, 19-PC) beat Pakistan (Nadeem Ahmad 8-FG) 2-1. PoM: Nilakanta Sharma (India).
