Odisha lifters continued to corner glory at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in Suva, Fiji with Hrudananda Das winning one silver and one bronze medal in 89kg category today. He lifted 129kg in snatch and 170kg in clean & jerk for a total of 299kg.
A trainee of Odisha-Tenvic Weightlifting HPC’s Dhenkanal Sub-Centre, 17-year-old Hrudananda secured the silver and the bronze in youth and junior categories respectively. He was honing his skills at the National camp in Patiala for the past six months.
According to Odisha Weightlifting Association secretary and Olympian K Ravi Kumar, Hrudananda is the second lifter from Dhenkanal Sub-Centre to win medal(s) at the ongoing Commonwealth Championship. The other lifter is Swayamjit Prasad Sahoo, who bagged the gold medal in the youth boys 67kg weight class yesterday.
In fact, all four Odisha weightlifters have made the state and the country proud by contributing a total of six medals, including four gold to the Indian tally at the Fiji Commonwealth Championship 2024. Earlier on the opening day, Mina Santa secured two gold and one silver in girls 55kg category, while Jyoshna Sabar captured one gold in girls 40kg class.
