  Beach Sepaktakraw: Odisha player wins U-23 Asian bronze

Indian men regu team, featuring Odisha player Thabir Naik, won the bronze medal at the U-23 Asian Beach Sepaktakraw Championship, which took place in Qingdao, China from 18 to 23 September 2024. India settled for the bronze medal after losing their semifinal match against Thailand 0-2. A total of eight countries participated in the championship.

India qualified for the semifinals, winning two matches and losing one at the league stage. India U-23 men started their campaign on a sparkling note, defeating hosts China 2-0. India went down fighting in their second match against Malaysia 1-2. In their third and last league match, India beat Iraq 2-0.

 

Five players from Nagaland represented India in this championship. They were: Mudutso Dozo, Angshan Konyak, Mongshai, Rukuvinu Tsukru and Sezovelu Dozo. The team was finalised at an open trial, organised by the Sepaktakraw Federation of India at the KD Jadhav Hall, IGI Sports Complex, New Delhi on 11 August 2024.

Thabir Naik hails from Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi and works at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar. KIIT and KISS founder Prof Achyuta Samanta and Odisha State Sepak Takraw Association secretary Pruthiraj Sahoo congratulated Thabir and the Indian team for their bronze medal achievement.
