Neeraj settles for silver; Arshad wins gold with Olympic record
08 Aug 2024

The quest for a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics remained unfulfilled for India as javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra settled for the silver medal with a throw of 89.45 metres at the the Stade de France in Paris tonight. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan not only won the gold but also created a new Olympic record with a stunning effort of 92.97 meters.

Reigning Olympic and Asian Games champion Neeraj clinched the silver medal on his second attempt, which turned out to be the only valid one in the 12-man final. The struggling Indian thrower wasted his other five attempts by committing fouls. Anderson Peters (Grenada) secured the bronze medal with an effort of 88.54 metres.

Arshad also claimed the gold on his second attempt after committing a foul in the first. He bettered the Olympic record of 90.57 metres that had stood for 16 years in the name of Andreas Thorkildsen. Arshad became the first Olympic medal winner since Barcelona 1992.

However, with this silver, Neeraj has become the fifth two-time Olympic medallist from India. Only Norman Pritchard, Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu and Manu Bhaker have achieved the same with the latter claiming two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He is also only the third athlete besides Sushil and Sindhu to win medals at two separate Summer Games.

Overall the Neeraj silver was the fifth medal for India at the Paris Olympic and the second of the day. Earlier, Indian mens hockey team bagged the bronze, defeating Spain 2-1. Manu Bhakar and Swapnil Kusale won the other three medals (all bronze) for India in shooting.
