Odisha swimmer Mannata Mishra wins Junior National gold
11 Aug 2024

Mannata Mishra made Odisha proud as she won the gold medal in Group-I girls 100m breaststroke, clocking 1:15.44 at the 50th Junior National Aquatic Championship, which concluded, along with the 40th Sub-junior National Aquatic Championship at the Kalinga Stadium Aquatic Centre in Bhubaneswar today.

This was the second Junior National medal for Mannata, who secured the 200m breaststroke bronze four days back. Host Odisha ended the campaign with a total of three medals in the combined National Aquatic Championships in Bhubaneswar. Shreyasi Das won the first medal for Odisha with a silver in Group-III sub-junior girls 100m backstroke earlier on 6 August 2024.

It may be noted that Mannata became the second swimmer from Odisha to win a gold medal in any National Aquatic Championship, held under the auspices of the Swimming Federation of India. The first-ever gold medallist from Odisha was Pratyasa Ray, who clinched three yellow metals in girls Group-II category of the 43rd Junior National Championship, held at Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre in Bangalore from 5 to 9 July 2016.

Karnataka emerged overall champions with a total of 104 medals and 799 points. The 104 medals featured 50 gold, 24 silver and 30 bronze. Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu finished second and third with 73 and 31 medals respectively. The six-day National championships produced a total of 11 new records.

Odisha Sports Sports & Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj graced the closing ceremony as chief guest and presented the overall champions trophy. State Sports & Youth Services Department Principal Secretary Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma, Swimming Federation of India Secretary General Monal Choksi and Odisha State Swimming Association president Pradip Padhee were present on the occasion.

The Sports Minister announced that the Odisha Government was constructing an indoor diving pool within the Kalinga Stadium and another indoor swimming pool complex with Olympic size pool and semi Olympic size pool capable for hosting events in Bhubaneswar. Additionally, Odisha will have 20 pools in the state dedicated to grassroots coaching.
