Happy homecoming for hockey Olympic medallist Rohidas
16 Aug 2024

Odisha hockey star Amit Rohidas returned home today after winning the bronze medal for the Indian mens team at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi felicitated him at the Lok Seva Bhavan. Amit presented the Chief Minister with the Paris Olympics jersey which bore the signatures of all Indian team members along with a mascot.

Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also greeted Rohidas at his residence. Earlier in the day, the dependable defender was accorded a rousing welcome by fans, friends and State Sports Department officials at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar.

State Sports Department Secretary Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma congratulated him at the Kalinga Stadium. Students of Bhubaneswar Sports Hostel and Odisha-Naval Tata Hockey High Performance Centre were present on the occasion.

It may be noted that the Odisha government has announced a cash reward of Rs 4 crore for Rohidas, while the Indian hockey team players will receive Rs 15 lakh each and the support staff Rs 10 lakh each.

This was the second successive Olympic medal for Rohidas, who was also a member of the Indian team that claimed the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Rohidas, who hails from Saunamara village of Sundargarh district, was the only player from Odisha to represent the Indian team at the Paris Olympics.

Hoping to win the gold medal, the Indian team settled for the bronze as they lost to Germany 2-3 in the semifinals. India played almost three quarters of that match with a man down as Rohidas was red-carded for dangerous play in the 17th minute.
