Promoting sports at grassroots level: JMSA shows the way
16 Aug 2024

When it comes to promoting sports at grassroots level, the exemplary achievements and contributions of JM Sports Academy (JMSA), a Bhubaneswar-based private gymnastics training centre, deserves a lot of applause. The role of the academy assumes added significance, considering the fact that it is being run by women gymnastics enthusiast-turned-national judge Mirarani Das with the support of her husband Jashobanta Das.

The couple started the academy at a rented hall in August 2013 and changed the home seven times before bringing up their own in 2018 at Semaigadia in Mancheswar. They sold their flat to take land on lease and spent around Rs 1 crore to build infra over an area of 14,000 sqft, including a 5000 sqft training hall, and purchase equipment.

“I love gymnastics and to help my daughter JM Ritika Das become a gymnast started acquiring knowledge about the sport. I completed judging courses in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics and even manufactured equipment with my own hands, using wood and iron. While grooming our daughter, we converted our home gym into a full-fledged academy so that we can share the benefits with other youngsters,” recalls Mira.

Within four years, JMSA has done a wonderful job, producing around 100 young gymnastic talents for the State, including Ritika, who is now a national level gymnast, honing her skills at the Odisha-AM/NS India Gymnastics High Performance Centre in Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar.

Apart from spotting and nurturing talents, JMSA has so far hosted three two invitational all India competitions, one State championship and three state level inter-school competitions till date. Trainees of the academy have started competing at State championships.

JMSA runs on a pay-and-learn scheme, but finds it tough to make both ends meet. It has three coaches and a couple of support staff, who train around 30 children five days in a week. “We spent around Rs 1 lakh every month to keep the academy going. It is very difficult to break even. But JMSA we will continue to produce young talents against all odds,” said Mira

Meanwhile, JMSA hosted the 3rd Invitational Inter-School Gymnastics Competition on 15 August 2024. A total of 85 boys and girls from different districts vied for laurels in four levels and age groups between six to 12 years.

Sushruta Hospital & Trauma Care Founder CEO Dr Chudatmikaa Khatua graced the closing ceremony as chief guest. Mass Education Assistant Director Kailash Chandra Pradhan, actress Dr Meghna Mishra, Bhubaneswar Gymnastics Association secretary Guruprasad Pattanaik, international gymnast Subhendra Patra and Kalinga Gaurava Foundation founder Dr Rajanikanta Mishra were guests of honour.
