  Sultan Johor Cup Hockey: India Junior Men win bronze medal

Indian Junior Men Hockey Team, featuring Odisha trio of Mukesh Toppo, Anmol Ekka and Rosan Kujur, won the Bronze medal in the 12th Sultan of Johor Cup U-21 International Hockey Tournament, edging out New Zealand 2-2 (3-2) in a thrilling shootout at Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia today.

India goalkeeper Bikramjit Singh held his nerves to make three excellent saves while strikers Gurjot Singh, Manmeet Singh and Sourabh Anand Kushwaha scored in the tense shootout. This is the third time that three-time champions India settled for the bronze medal in the Sultan of Johor Cup. Great Britain captured the gold medal for the fourth time, defeating Australia 3-2 in the final.

 

Earlier at the league stage, India beat Japan, Great Britain and Malaysia, lost to Australia and drew with New Zealand. Amir Ali led the 18-member Indian Junior team with Rohit as his deputy. Former India goalkeeper PR Sreejesh made his debut as the head coach of the Indian Junior team in this tournament. Besides emerging champions three times earlier in 2013, 2014 and 2022, India won the silver medal four times (2012, 2015, 2018, 2019) and bronze medal twice (2017, 2023).

INDIAN JUNIOR MEN HOCKEY TEAM: Goalkeepers: Bikramjit Singh, Ali Khan. Defenders: Amir Ali (Captain), Talem Priyobarta, Shardanand Tiwari, Sukhvinder, Anmol Ekka, Rohit (Vice-captain). Mid-fielders: Ankit Pal, Manmeet Singh, Rosan Kujur, Mukesh Toppo, Chandan Yadav. Forwards: Gurjot Singh, Sourabh Anand Kushwaha, Dilraj Singh, Arshdeep Singh, Mohd Konain Dad.

19 Oct 2024: India (Amir Ali 12-FG, Gurjot Singh 36-FG, Sourbh Anand Kushwaha 44-PC, Ankit Pal 47-FG) beat Japan (Tsubasa Tanaka 26-FG, Rakusei Yamanaka 57-PC) 4-2.

20 Oct 2024: India (Mohd Konain Dad 2-PC, Dhiraj Singh 17-FG, 50-FG, Shardanand Tiwari 20-PC, 50-PC, Manmeet Singh 26-FG) beat Great Britain (Rory Penrose 2-PC, 15-PC, Michael Royden 46-FG, 59-FG) 6-4.

22 Oct 2024: India (Shardanand Tiwari 11-PC, Arshdeep Singh 13-FG, Talem Priyobarta 39-FG, Rohit 40-PC) beat Malaysia (Muhammad Danish Aiman 8-FG, Harris Osman 9-PC) 4-2.

23 Oct 2024: India lost to Australia (Andrew Patrick 29-FG, Stanger Daykin 33-FG, 39-FG, 53-FG) 0-4.

25 Oct 2024: India (Gurjot Singh 6-FG, Rohit 17-PC, Talem Priyobarta 60-PC) drew with New Zealand (Jonty Elmes 17-PS, 32-PC, 45-PS) 3-3.

26 Oct 2024 (Bronze-medal match): India (Dilraj Singh 11-FG, Manmeet Singh 20-FG) drew with New Zealand (Owen Brown 51-FG, Jonty Elmes 57-FG) 2-2. Shootout: India (Gurjot Singh, Manmeet Singh, Sourabh Anand Kushwaha) beat New Zealand (Jonty Elmes 2) 3-2.
