A valiant first-inning century by Sandeep Pattanaik proved in vain as Odisha Senior Men Cricket Team suffered an inning and 103-run defeat against Mumbai on the last day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Group-A match at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai today.
This was the second successive innings defeat in four matches for Odisha, who lost to Baroda by an innings and 98-run in their previous match at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. The innings victory fetched Mumbai seven points, while Odisha drew blank. Mumbai left-arm spinner Shams Mulani was awarded as the man of the match for bagging 11 wickets in the match.
Pattanaik stood tall in the crushing defeat for Odisha, scoring 102 runs with the help of 11 fours and four sixes. This was the fifth first-class hundred for Pattanaik, who also contributed 39 runs in the second innings.
Put into bat by Odisha captain Govinda Poddar, Mumbai rode on a double century by Shreyas Iyer and an unbeaten century by Siddhesh Lad to declare their first innings at 602 for four. In reply, Odisha made 285 to concede a first-innings lead of 317 runs. Forced to follow on, Odisha were bowled out for 214 in their second innings.
Besides Pattanaik, young stumper Aashirwad Swain put up notable performances with the bat, scoring 37 and 51 in the first and second innings respectively. Odisha will play their fifth match against Maharashtra at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack from November 13 to 16.
