Leading Odisha tennis player Pratyush Mohanty achieved the biggest success of his career by winning an All India Tennis Association (AITA) mens singles title for the first time today. He achieved the glory at the Beldih Club AITA National Ranking Mens 1 Lakh Tournament with a hard-fought victory in the final against Chandan Shivraj of Karnataka at Beldih Club in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
Down by a set, Bhubaneswar youth Pratyush fought back with grit and determination to win the title clash 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Earlier, 22-year-old Pratyush beat West Bengal opponents Rohan Mondal 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Shounak Chatterjee 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Student of KIIT University, Pratyush earned 20 All India ranking points for the title triumph. With the addition of these 20 points his position is set to rise from 60 to 50 in AITA rankings.
“Winning an AITA mens singles title for the first time has also made me richer by experience. It will motivate me to work on my game with greater dedication and enthusiasm,” said a beaming Pratyush, who now trains at Altevol-KiiT Alexander Waske Tennis Academy in Bhubaneswar.
Son of Pravanjan Mohanty and Sasmita Praharaj, Pratyush won more than eight AITA age-group titles before graduating to the senior level. He started his career at Bhubaneswar-based SS Tennis Academy, under the guidance of eminent coach Subhranshu Charan Sarangi, whom he now treats Sarangi as his mentor.
