  Womens Asian Hockey Champions Trophy: India retain title

Host India retained the title in the 8th Womens Asian Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament, defeating China 1-0 in the hard-fought final at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Rajgir, Bihar today. Deepika Sehrawat scored the only goal of the match. China settled for the silver medal, while Japan claimed the bronze, beating Malaysia 4-1 earlier in the day.

This was the third gold medal triumph for India in the Women Asian Champions Trophy with the earlier two coming in 2016 and 2023. Besides the three gold, Indian women have won the silver medal twice (2013 and 2018) and bronze once (2010).

 

Deepika was sensational throughout the tournament, scoring 11 goals in seven matches. She bagged two individual awards as the top scorer as well as the player of the tournament.

Asian Hockey Federation announced a reward for podium finishers for the very first time in the history of the Champions Trophy. Champion India received USD 10,000, while China and Japan were awarded USD 7,000 and USD 5,000 respectively.

The Bihar Government announced cash awards of Rs 10 lakh each for the Indian players, Rs 10 lakh for the chief coach and Rs 5 lakh for the support staff. Hockey India also announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh for each player and Rs 1.5 lakh for every support staff member of the victorious team.

In the semifinals yesterday, India beat Japan 2-0, while China defeated Malaysia 3-1. India booked berth in the semifinals, winning all of their five league matches. They beat Malaysia 4-0, Korea 3-2, Thailand 13-0, China 3-0 and Japan 3-0.

Salima Tete led the 18-member team with Navneet Kaur as her deputy. Sunelita Toppo was the only player from Odisha to represent the Indian team in this tournament. She put up brilliant performance the semifinals, doing the spadework for the second goal.
