  Jr Natl Badminton: Odisha girls team wins first-ever gold

Odisha achieved a major success in badminton by winning the gold medal for the first time in girls team event of the 47th Inter-State National Junior (U-19) Championship at Biju Patnaik Multi-Purpose Indoor Stadium in Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar today. The seven-member Odisha team clinched the gold medal, defeating Tamil Nadu in the final 2-0.

On their way to the final, Odisha defeated Chandigarh and West Bengal in the quarterfinal and semifinal respectively by 2-0 identical margin. Three junior internationals played and won all three matches for Odisha. They were Tanvi Patri in singles, and the pair of Pragati Parida and Vishakha Toppo in doubles.

 

Other four players of the squad included Geetashree Dey, Sweety Priya Pradhan, Adya Padhi and Ashwika Mishra. The Odisha girls team received a cash prize of Rs 1.25 lakh. Odisha team manager Kamal Das described the title triumph as a historic achievement.

“Odisha girls team was able to compete by virtue of getting a wild card as the host State. But the team performed much above expectations and clinched a historic gold. That Odisha girls won all three matches by 2-0 margin speaks volumes about their domination,” said Das.

Odisha State Badminton Association (OSBA) president Rajesh Prabhakar Patil, Asia Badminton Technical Committee chairman Omar Rashid, Para Badminton India chairman K Prabhakar Rao and OSBA secretary Nileen Kumar handed over the trophies and the trophies and medals at the presentation ceremony.

However, Odisha boys team, featuring Mayank Bharadwaj, Divyam Kejriwal, Bapun Rout, Shreyansh Jena, Subhraketan Mallick, Jyotisurya Pramanik and Arpit Panda bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing to Delhi 0-2. Ajit Mohanty and Abhishek Biswas guided the Odisha junior teams as coaches. Team events will be followed by individual competitions from November 21 to 25.

ODISHA GIRLS TEAM RESULTS:

19 November (Quarterfinals): Odisha beat Chandigarh 2-0 (Tanvi Patri bt Rijul Saini 21-18, 21-18. Pragati Parida & Vishakha Toppo bt Rijul Saini & Nimar Kaur Virk 21-10, 21-11).

19 November (Semifinals): Odisha beat West Bengal 2-0 (Tanvi Patri bt Kanishka Bijarnia 21-11, 21-15. Pragati Parida & Vishakha Toppo bt Mukaan Chatterjee & Sukanya Choudhury 21-9, 21-11).

20 November (Final): Odisha beat Tamil Nadu 2-0 (Tanvi Patri bt Prakriti Bharath 10-21, 21-13, 21-17. Pragati Parida & Vishakha Toppo bt Pravandhika R & Reshika U 21-18, 21-14).
