  Sr Women NFC: Pyari sixer propels Odisha into Final Round

Odisha booked a berth in the Final Round of the 29th Senior Women National Football Championship for Rajmata Jijabai Trophy, trouncing Madhya Pradesh 12-0 in their third and last Group-F match at RTD Stadium in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh today.

Star forward Pyari Xaxa, who is fondly called as Ferrari for her remarkable speed, scored six goals alone, Subhadra Sahoo and Manisha Naik netted a brace each, while Deepa Nayak contributed one. Meenu scored one self goal for Madhya Pradesh.

This was the second win for former champions Odisha, who earlier crushed Ladakh 7-0 and drew with Arunachal Pradesh 0-0. Both Odisha and Arunachal finished with seven points each. But Odisha emerged as the group toppers on goal difference and qualified for the final round.
 

Football Association of Odisha fielded a 22-member State team for this championship, which commenced in different states earlier on 5 October 2024. Out of a total of 33 participating teams, 31 played at the league stage in eight groups, while defending champions Manipur and runners-up Haryana will the play final round directly.

The Final Round will feature two groups of five teams each and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. Tamil Nadu, Railways, Punjab and Mahararashtra have already qualified for the final round.

The first edition of the Senior Women National Football Championship was held in Manipur in 1992. Manipur have been the most dominant side in the history of the championship, winning the title 22 out of the 28 times so far.

West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have won two titles each, while Odisha and Railways have been champions once each. Odisha won their only title in 2011, trouncing West Bengal 5-0 in the final in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh. Odisha has finished runners-up five times (2002, 2008, 2010, 2019) so far.

19 Oct 2024 (League match): Odisha (Subhadra Sahoo 22, 41, Pyari Xaxa 27, 35, Manisha Naik 68, Malati Munda 71, Deepa Nayak 84) beat Lakadkh 7-0. PoM: Pyari Xaxa.
21 Oct 2024 (League match): Odisha drew with Arunachal Pradesh 0-0.
23 Oct 2024 (League match): Odisha (Pyari Xaxa 10, 35, 50, 52, 56, 73, Deepa Nayak 26, Manisha Naik 32, 71, Subhadra Sahoo 44, 63) beat Madhya Pradesh (Meenu 45+4 OG) 7-0. PoM: Pyari Xaxa.
