Tennis: Odisha ace Aahan clinches Asia U16 double crown
28 Dec 2024

Rising Odisha tennis star Aahan won both the girls singles and doubles titles in the Asian U-16 Grade-2 Juniors Series Tennis Tournament at the Kalinga Stadium Tennis Centre, Bhubaneswar.

Displaying sheer dominance and skill throughout the tournament, local favourite Aahan won the singles final, defeating Akansha Ghosh (India) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Aahan and partner Akansha Ghosh overcame stiff competition from Indian opponents Shreeniti Chowdhury and Jahnavi Chowdary Madarmittla to win the doubles final 6-4, 6-4.

The stellar performance of Aahan earned her 300 Asian ranking points in singles and 200 in doubles. The double crown will significantly boost her All India Under-16 rankings and World Tennis Number rating, paving the way for her participation in ITF Juniors and other international tournaments.

India made a clean sweep of all four titles with Mannan Ashok Agarwal defeating Saksham Bhansali 6-3, 6-3 in the boys singles summit clash. Chukka Lakshya Vardhan and Parth Sane emerged boys doubles champions, getting the better of Mannan Ashok Agarwal and Saksham Bhansali in the final 6-4, 6-3.

The singles titles winners earned 300 Asian ranking points, while the runners-up garnered 250 points. In the doubles category, winners were awarded 200 points, and runners-up 120 points. Twenty-five per cent points will contribute to their All India U-16 rankings.

Organised by the Odisha Tennis Association (OTA), under the auspices of the All India Tennis Association (AITA), and sanctioned by the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF), the tournament witnessed over 156 matches across singles, doubles, and consolation events, spanning over eight days, extended due to rain delays on December 24 and 25.

OTA President Asit Tripathy, Secretary Dr Satyajit Mohanty, Treasurer Satyajit Mohanty (Rubuna) and Administrative Officer Sambit Patnaik presented the trophies and certificates to the winners and runners-up. ATF Supervisor Prabin Kumar Nayak was present on the occasion.
