  National Games: Animesh wins gold; Silver for Rajeswari, Roshni

Odisha sprinter Animesh Kujur emerged as the fastest man of the ongoing 38th National Games, winning gold medal in mens 100m sprint at the Maharana Pratap Sports College Stadium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand today. He clinched the gold with a time of 10.28 seconds.

The gold by 21-year-old Animesh was first medal for Odisha in athletics. He also equaled the Games record of 10.28 seconds set by Amlan Borgohain of Assam. Pranav Gurav (Maharashtra) won the silver medal while Borgohain settled for bronze. But Odisha woman Olympian Srabani Nanda failed to live upto her reputation as she finished sixth in 100m dash with a time of 12.27 seconds.

 

Odisha also won its first medal in lawn bowling as Rajeswari Seth and Roshni Sahu secured the silver medal in womens pair after losing to Assam 10-19 in the final match at the Hockey Practice Ground in Maharana Pratap Sports College Stadium, Dehradun.

The Odisha duo advanced to the final by defeating Jharkhand 16-14 in the semi-finals. Rajeswari and Roshni qualified for the semifinals, winning two matches and losing at the league stage. They defeated Bihar 21-12 and Manipur 30-12, and lost to Assam 13-14.

With two medals on the 12th day of the National Games, the total number of medals for Odisha increased to 26, which featured six gold, nine silver and 11 bronze. Odisha now occupy the 16 spot in the overall medal tally. In tennis, Kabir Hans lost to Udit Kamboj (Haryana) in the first round by 1-2 sets.
