National Games: Animesh Kujur clinches sprint double for Odisha
11 Feb 2025

Odisha star athlete Animesh Kujur clinched a sprint double by winning both the mens 100m and 200m gold medals in the 38th National Games medal at the Maharana Pratap Sports College Stadium in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The 22-year-old sprinter completed the coveted double by adding the 200m title today with a time of 20.58 seconds to the 100m crown he claimed three days ago.

Animesh, who hails from Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh and trains at Odisha Reliance Foundation Athletics High Performance Centre in Bhubaneswar, was also part of the Odisha mens 4x100m relay team that captured the gold medal two days back.

With three gold medals to his name, Animesh, thus, became the most successful Odisha sportsperson across disciplines at the ongoing National Games. Besides bagging three gold medals, he set a new Games Record in 100m and registered personal best time in 200m.

Odisha claimed two medals on the 15th day of the National Games today with canoeist Rasmita Sahoo securing one bronze in women sprint C1 200m category with a time of 51.288 at the Water Sports Complex in Tehri. Odisha now stands 14th in the overall medal tally with a total of 35 medals, which include 10 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze.

Meanwhile, Odisha suffered heartbreaks in hockey as both the men and women teams of the state bowed out after failing to qualify for the semifinals. Odisha men finished third in Pool-A league with six points, winning and losing two games each. They ended their campaign with a 1-2 loss against Punjab yesterday.

Odisha women hockey team ended fourth with three points in Pool-A after going down to Haryana 2-3 in their fourth and last league game yesterday. That was the third defeat for Odisha women who could win only one match, defeating Karnataka 4-1.

Odisha achieved a major success in artistic gymnastics yesterday as Tapan Mohanty was crowned as the mens all-around champion with 71.867 points at Bhagirathi Hall in Dehradun. But the gold medal went to his employer Services. This was the second gold medal for Puri gymnast Mohanty, who also helped Services win the mens team gold earlier.
